The ball is on it’s way to your forehand, your eyes widen in anticipation, you feel excited and ready to pounce–your feet move as if dancing across the court and you’re thinking, “I’m gonna kill this ball”. You’re all set–in position, racquet back, body primed for the assault and….bang! Another unforced error!

Has this ever happened to you? It sure as heck has happened to me!

It feels horrible, doesn’t it? It’s embarrassing too. There you are, ready to hit a shot well within your capability to hit well–and nothing but an error.

OUCH!

COACH’S ADVICE

The following items are in a particular sequence. Each one impacts the other. so do them in order and you’ll see a real difference.

1. Slow Your Mind

The tendency is to speed up your thinking when you want to kill the ball. However, when you slow yourself down, you miraculously become more efficient. Think S-L-O-W.

2. R-E-L-A-X

Slowing down your mind leads to a more relaxed body. Wow, relax is a word you don’t hear much of (Kidding). The loss of power that happens when you try to kill the ball occurs because you tighten more muscles than are necessary to hit the shot. THIS IS THE NUMBER ONE REASON FOR ERRORS ON THE TENNIS COURT. You might think it’s mechanical but it’s not. it’s tension and tension begins in the mind.

A relaxed muscle has more energy moving through it which means you are more powerful, accurate and consistent.

3. TRUST

Gee, another word you hear all the time! When you slow down your mind, your body stops restricting your energy flow and you are left with only one thing: TRUST THAT THIS IS ENOUGH.

Your body already knows what to do–all you need to do now is let it.
